4 Rising Female Artists You Need To Watch in 2017

New music alert!! January is almost over but the internet has been buzzing about new music for 2017 since its started. Yes, 2016 was bleak but it gave us wonderful music. Beyonce conquered the world with Lemonade. Frank Ocean FINALLY dropped his highly anticipated album with Blonde. Bey’s little sis Solange brought us A Seat At The Table, and Childish Gambino finished up the year with his funk/soul LP Awaken My Love. If there is anything to take away from 2016, is that there is a new wave of music coming in 2017. Thank goodness!

In light of the historic Women’s March this past week, below is a list of upcoming female artists for us to watch out for this year. From hip-hop to the indie rock scene, these women are making huge waves in the music industry all thanks to social media. They are not afraid of shaking things up, break molds, establish new genres, and take musical experimentation to new levels. Let’s get to it!

  1. Seratones- The Seratones is a rock’n’roll band from Shreveport, Louisiana. Singer AJ Haynes leads the band with her fierce vocals. They are a force to be reckoned with their sheer southern grit and punk rock awesomeness. This band is sure to spice up anyone’s playlist.

2.) Noname- Keep a lookout for Fatimah Warner aka Noname, a rapper/poet from Chicago, Illinois. She first gained recognition when she appeared with Chance the Rapper on his Acid Rap mixtape. Her 2016 debut mixtape Telefone has received critical acclaim. Expect her music to give you a soulful remedy during hard times in case 2017 gets too…chaotic.

3.) Ray Blk- Get ready to hear Ray Blk take over airwaves in 2017! The R&B British songstress covers topics from social justice and feminism. She has been compared to Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill for her lyrical honesty. Just recently the BBC has crowned Ray Blk as the first unsigned artist to top its Sound of 2017 list.

4.) Leaf– Leaf is a rapper from Brooklyn, New York. In 2015, her E.P Magnet B*tch was released and people have been talking about her ever since. Just recently she dropped her feminist anthem “Nada”. What makes her music so appealing is her bold, in your face attitude. She’s not afraid of saying what she feels. Leaf has already started a movement she dubbed the “Magnet B*tch Movement” to inspire girls to empower themselves and each other. So I’m looking forward to seeing what she brings in 2017.
