Dear White People

In April 2017, Netflix premiered one of its newest series, “Dear White People.” Based on the novel by Justin Simien, the show goes into depth about the feelings of a group of black students attending a predominantly white Ivy League college.
The show deals with issues such as using the ‘N’ word, black face, interracial dating, and police prejudice. The series stars Logan Browning as Samantha White and Brandon P. Bell as Troy Fairbanks. Nia Long also stars in the series as Neika Hobbs, a professor at the fictional Winchester University.
13th

Another Netflix original on our list is “13th.” While it originally premiered at the New York Film Festival in September 2016, it was brought to a larger population when Netflix released it.
Telling the chilling truth about the 13th Amendment, the film discusses the idea that although this amendment freed the slaves in 1865, the country still created a way to keep black people in chains, which came with the boom of the prison system. The documentary goes through time and shows how in the words of Barack Obama, the United States, which only has 5% of the world’s population came to have 25% of the world’s prisoners.
Southside With You

While we all love a good, fictional love story, why not dive into a real one? If you’re a lover of all things Obama, you’ll definitely appreciate this love story. Southside with You is the film based on the story of our 44th president, Barack Obama, and his wife, Michelle. Their story begins while they are both working at a Chicago law firm, Barack as an associate and Michelle as a lawyer. Patrick Sawyer and Tika Sumpter star as Barack and Michelle Obama, respectively.
The Getdown

If you love music and you love the 70s, this Netflix Original Series is definitely for you! Set in the Bronx in the 1970s, “The Getdown” tells the story of a group of teenagers who band together to become musical sensations. In addition to giving us a look into the music of that time and location, it also provides a peak into the lives of those living in the South Bronx.
Queen of Katwe

Based on the novel by Tim Crothers, Queen of Katwe brings to life the story of Phiona Mutesi. Played by Madina Nalwanga, this young girl from Katwe, Uganda learns to play chess and excels at it, gaining her way to the World Chess Olympiads. Lupita Nyong’o stars as Phiona’s mother while David Oyelowo stars as her chess instructor.
If you’re still in the mood for more shows and movies, check out the classic “The Bernie Mac Show” for a few old laughs or the newer family sitcom, “The Carmichael Show” for new ones. Breaking away from the traditional family sitcom, the Netflix Original Series “Chewing Gum” is a comedy about a sheltered, 24-year-old virgin who sets about losing her virginity. For those in the mood of looking at a little eye candy, be sure to catch “The Brothers” which stars Morris Chestnut, Bill Bellamy, and Shemar Moore.
