Most of our childhoods were filled with the classic sitcoms where black families were introduced to the screen. It’s impossible to forget some of the most popular families like the Cosbys, the Winslows, and the Evans. These families branched off into more modern families like the Kyles from My Wife and Kids and the Rocks from Everybody Hates Chris. Although most of these shows are on syndication, we’re not getting any new episodes or content from this show, so where do we tune into to find the modern day black family?

The Carmichael Family – The Carmichael Show
Created by Jerrod Carmichael, The Carmichael Show follows the story of his fictional family living in Charlotte, North Carolina. The show initially premiered August 2015 and has had two successful seasons. Although this show is a comedy, it includes current and real-life situations that are happening in the world. The show has tackled the Black Lives Matters movement, the Cosby scandal, and Islamophobia. In May 2016, the show was renewed for a third season.
The Harris Family – T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle
One thing that we didn’t have in abundance in the past as we do now is reality TV shows. One family that we’re definitely following on VH1 is the Harris family. The show initially premiered in 2011 and has been going strong ever since. It follows T.I. and Tiny as they manage their professional and personal lives. The show initially begins after T.I. returned from serving his prison sentence but has branched out to him promoting his album and going on tour while Tiny manages her group OMG Girlz and expands the family. The most current and fifth season of the show wrapped up in August 2016.
The Johnson Family – Black-ish
While some might’ve been skeptical of the show before it hit the screens Black-ish has gone on to be a major success. Starring Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, the show stars an upper-middle-class African American family. Premiering in September 2014, the show hasn’t been afraid to tackle the issues that black people are facing today. In Season 2, they had one of their more powerful episodes “Hope,” where the family tackles police brutality while watching a news coverage. The third season will premiere fall 2016.
The McGhee Family – Growing Up McGhee
Some people think that one child is enough, but keep your complaints away from the McGhees. Mia and Rozonno McGhee have six children, all the same age. While they balance their four boys and two girls, they also manage their own carpet and upholstery business. Initially appearing on OWN from 2012 to 2014, this show was referred to as 6 Little McGhees. In June 2016, the show returned to the screen on UP with its new title.
While you might feel the need to revert back to the classic shows like The Cosby Show or Good Times, there are definitely current shows that show the modern black family! With fall premieres just around the corner, make sure you tune in!
